Le Ly Hayslip, Vietnamese author, guest speaker and subject of the Oliver Stone film "Heaven
and Earth", organized a Vietnamese-style wedding anniversary for participants. Called a "Golden
Wedding Ceremony," Hayslip honored two couples on Peace Boat who have been together for 50 years
in front of an audience of more than 200. The Tamuras and the Asakuras celebrated their special day
surrounded by young women in Ao dai, the traditional Vietnamese dress. In a Vietnamese wedding ceremony
gratitude is expressed to "the gods in heaven, the gods on earth, family members, relatives and
for all people. Participants were able to experience the Vietnamese belief that "at the bottom
of their happiness, there always live gods and people." There was also a "honeymoon night" performance,
which recalled the couple's first night - an amusing and surprising event for many participants! |

Participants were held spellbound as comic storyteller Kikontei Kikuchiyo performed Rakugo, a traditional
Japanese comic art form. Kikuchiyo is one of only 16 women Rakugo comedians in Japan. When she first
started studying to become a performer there were only four women in the field and she had to work
hard to be accepted in the male-dominated Rakugo world. Performing solo, Rakugo artists deliver a
demanding ninety-minute monologue, which requires acting out the voices of all the characters in a
story. Kikuchikyo is also involved in keeping Rakugo alive by teaching a female student, who was on
a previous Peace Boat voyage. As a finale, participants were taught the sign language of a Japanese
folk song and performed it. |

A crowd of about 100 people gathered up on the pool deck for a short aquatic performance called Water
Babies, as a parody of the famous Japanese movie "Water Boys." The original story is about
high school boys who band together to make a synchronized swimming club while struggling with the
challenges of adolescence. Water Boys, which was also made into a TV series, is a huge hit in Japan,
as was the Water Babies performance. Nine young participants wearing diapers jumped into the pool
and then performed a short dance skit. |

Indian Ocean Soccer Tournament
Seventeen soccer teams of mixed men and women participants battled for the 46th Voyage's Ocean's Cup
on August 3rd. The first of three soccer tournaments during this voyage, the Indian Ocean stage saw
four minute games playing 4-on-4 on the ship's sports deck. After five hours of group competition,
Hentai Kamen faced Fukenko in a longer ten minute final. Hentai Kamen, whose members wore Singapore's
kit, dominated from the start with smooth footwork. Fukenko battled back, but had to settle for a
6-3 lose. |
