Passing through the Panama Canal from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean
Since August 15, 1914, almost a million vessels have passed between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans through the Panama Canal. The 80 kilometre long waterway rises up to 26 metres above sea level at its highest point, and vessels are elevated and lowered through the channel by three sets of locks.

Peace Boat participants watched the huge gates of the Gatun Locks swing shut, as nearly 200 million litres of water raised the ship up to the first level. All passenger ships traverse the canal by night, and many stayed up to the early hours of the morning to experience the unique event of crossing between the two great oceans by an inland channel.
