| King Neptune watches over the crossing into the southern hemisphere |
Participants crowded the top deck of Peace Boat to celebrate the crossing of the equator into the Southern Hemisphere. In brilliant sunshine, King Neptune sat and watched the pantomime style performance of the rescue of a glamorous maiden from the clutches of two evil sea demons. Volunteers from the crowd took the stage to take part in an eating race, with the winner deemed strong enough to be the swashbuckling hero.
Once the beautiful maiden was released, the crowd listened to who had won the contest in order to guess the time that the ship would actually cross the line of the equator. The money raised from the competition went to support the Peace Boat Mine Abolition Campaign (P-MAC). To complete the crossing from North to South, participants jumped over a red paper line to cheer the ship into a new hemisphere. |
