| Zany Sports Day festivities on the Neptune Deck |
The Peace Boat cruise tradition of holding a day
long Sports Festival was certainly not forgotten on the 40th voyage.
During Peace Boat's longest stretch at sea, we all caught the sporty
season fever. Participants joined one of four teams that matched the
season in which they were born, so each side included competitors
from all age groups and abilities. For days leading up to the Big
Day Out, summer, winter, autumn and spring sports-stars and supporters
gathered to build team spirit, practise cheers and prepare banners.
On January 20, the rear deck was replete with flags from around the
world and colourful streamers, and the sun shone down brightly over
Peace Boat as it crossed the Atlantic Ocean. An obstacle course featuring
racing with an egg and spoon, eating a dangling bread roll, picking
up peas with chopsticks and tricycle sprinting, ensured the spectators
were in stitches of laughter as they watched racers call on their
hidden sporting prowess. Other events included multiple person pool
wrestling, tug of war, and jumping rope en masse. The atmosphere was
reminiscent of October 10, which is national 'Sports Day' in Japan.
Families flock to school grounds to join their children in a fun-filled
day of sporty and comical action, laughter and eating traditional
boxed lunches ('obento'). Participants also enjoyed rice ball filled
'obento' as we chatted with team members, who on an ordinary day,
we probably would not have a chance to spend time with. At the end
of the day, the triumphant Summer team members packed into the famed
'Mirror Bar' to enjoy the victors' reward of free drinks. |
