| Peace Boat's Eco-Friendly Team ('Eco-team')
making notebooks from used office paper |
Peace Boat's environmental movers and shakers,
the Eco-team, has been busy helping to 'green' life on the ship. After
Zero Waste environmental consultant, Muna Rakhani, helped the Eco-team
compile ideas on how Peace Boat can adopt more eco-friendly ways,
(such as encouraging participants to avoid using disposable chopsticks
by purchasing a durable set, or working towards the recycling and
smart disposal of waste in each port of call by setting up partnerships
with local environmental NGOs), the Eco-team has been seeking to implement
some of these great ideas. Some recent examples of eco-friendly activities
that have involved a broad cross-section of participants include organic
soap and recycled papermaking. Soap making knowledge was passed on
by Eco team members in Tokyo prior to departure so the 40th cruise
team was able to bring with them all of the essential ingredients
to produce an array of eco-friendly soaps. The recycled paper was
produced by blending used office paper on which the ship's daily schedule
had been printed on, with water and glue flakes, then pressing the
mixture out flat to dry in the sun. The trial production run for each
of these products was very successful. Not only did participants find
the eco-activity enjoyable and easy to understand, but everyone realised
how useful and attractive the handmade goods could be. One of the
Eco-team's next projects is to promote hemp products in the Peace
Boat shop. There are so many positive steps we can take to improve
Peace Boat's 'ecological footprint' (that is, our impact on the environment).
It looks like our current efforts, although small-scale, are a good
step in the right direction! |
