Otomatsuri
The choral group singing "Furusato"
Open to all, the Festival of Sound showcased a plethora of passenger talent to an overflowing venue. The performers ranged from young to old, first-timers to pros, and some acts were quite polished, despite the lack of rehearsal time in busy ship life. Korean drumming and singing, traditional Japanese songs, poetry, guitar solos and djembe duets and a trio of women singing upbeat pop songs showed off the passengers's vocal and instrumental talents, while the PET bottle blowers had the audience humming along. Taiko thundered through the chairs and chests of the audience, swing dance had them tapping their feet and Nanchu Soran, a Japanese fisherman's dance, held them mesmerised. There were some false starts, mistakes and embarrassed grins, but the support of friends in the audience encouraged everyone to surpass expectations. While the audience votes were counted, the sign language class led everyone in a rendition of the departure song, a quirky way to end the Festival of Sound. The gospel choir stole the prize with two popular Japanese songs and won a private concert with guitarist Ryuhei Kobayashi, who had been invited to comment on the acts.
