Jasna Bastic - War in Former Yugoslavia, Propaganda and the Media
Jasna Bastic speaks of the war in the Balkans
In her two lectures, Jasna Bastic, a peace activist and freelance journalist originally from Sarajevo, spoke about the origins of the conflict in former Yugoslavia and the relationship between the media and propaganda. Working for a range of national and international media (specialising in issues concerning the former Yugoslavia and peaceful conflict resolution), Ms. Bastic is onboard to co-coordinate the International Student programme, encouraging those starting out on their journalistic careers to question their role in impartial dissemination of facts. This issue of responsibility was strongly emphasised in her lectures, from identifying those who chose to create and enforce ethnic hatred through the media, to the role of international institutions in preventative strategies and conflict resolution. She also raised the notion of a personal sense of responsibility on the part of the global community who, due to the availability and immediacy of information provided by the media, can no longer plead ignorance to world events.
