| Emin, Jasmina and Zainab - A look at three Islamic societies |
 |
| Jasmina Hadzikaric, International Student from Bosnia |
The influence of Islam on the culture of Turkey, Pakistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina was portrayed in this event through the eyes of Peace Boat participant Emin, originally from Turkey, and International Students, Zainab and Jasmina. The discussion touched on the legal systems and civil institutions, the role of women in society and religious customs, food and traditions. Jasmina, from the oldest Muslim family in Sarajevo, spoke of religious diversity in secular Bosnia, stating along with Emin that religion has no influence over the state, law or the army in Bosnia and Turkey, emphasising the tolerance between groups of Christians, Orthodox Jews and Muslims. Zainab, on the other hand, explained that Islam dictates the Pakistan constitution and law. She talked of the resulting insecurity for minority groups and how incorrect interpretations of the Quran can result in one person's perceptions being imposed on the majority. On a more intimate level, the speakers talked about marriage, from mixed marriages in ex-Yugoslavia to traditional Turkish proposals and Hindu-influenced wedding festivities in Pakistan. Placing the discussion in a social and historical context enabled participants to see how the basic tenets of Islam have developed and were influenced by indigenous culture in countries worldwide. |
