| Profile - Global English Training (GET) Program |
 |
| GET teachers, coordinators and participants
whipping up a storm of enthusiasm for participation in the morning
open English classes and intensive classes held throughout the
day |
For the next three months, two coordinators and
eight teachers will guide 96 participants through a unique language
study program designed to teach English not as the language of this
country or that, but rather an internationally shared tool for communication
between people in different countries and speaking different native
languages. The program utilizes the unique learning environment onboard,
quite different from the standard study environment at home in Japan,
to bring students of a wide range of ages and backgrounds together
in a lively and stimulating environment where English (and Spanish!)
become not subjects of study but real tools of communication with
other people onboard and in port. The focal experience of the program
though are the home stays organized in countries in which English
is either the primary language, as in Australia and New Zeland, or
a widely spoken second language, as in Singapore or India. In this
way participants are able to discover and utilize the international-ness
of English as well as improve their ability to communicate with their
hosts about life and focus issues in the countries we visit. |

India, playing the chef with the prize for the winners of the
English treasure hunt |
As passengers relaxed after a busy day exploring
the diverse and flashy city-state of Singapore, GET Program participants
raced around the ship competing to unravel clues and locate the venue
of the Cross Border party. This English treasure hunt, masterminded
by teachers, aimed to give participants the chance to get to know
the other members of the International Division and overcome any lingering
shyness. While many hours over the next three months will be spent
learning how to communicate using 組lobal・English and Spanish, there
will be no lack of extraordinary activities designed to break down
barriers of shyness and confidence, and inspire an easy, enjoyable
and functional approach to communication. Special guests for this
introductory event included English and Spanish interpreters, international
staff, passengers, students and of course the English teachers doing
their best to set a good example of throwing inhibition and humility
to the wind. |

|
Prior to arriving in Singapore, GET coordinator
Rika Satake introduced the GET Program's onboard musical production,
A Common Beat・ All Peace Boat participants are invited to participate
regardless of age, English ability or experience, providing a cross-generational
interaction and team-work based opportunity to address artistically
issues of conflict, borders and discovering of shared humanity between
different people, themes Peace Boat confronts everyday. Based on a
production by the now disbanded American group up with People the
GET Musical will commence after Istanbul and after many hours of devoted
practice by the mostly first-time performers, be performed in various
Pacific ports of call as well as onboard. The performance will involve
two casts of 50 or more members each, and incorporate dance and costume
from peoples in Africa, Europe, North and South America and Asia,
portraying the sometimes violent but eventually peaceful discovery
of each othe. |
