Guest speakers Rey Ventura and Kazuma Momoi first
met in 1986 when Momoi, starting out on his career as a photojournalist,
was accompanied by Rey acting as his revolutionary guide on a trip
to the mountainous Sierra Madre region in the north of the Philippines.
Visiting a guerilla camp of the New People's Army at the time of a
temporary truce between the rebels and the army, they captured images
of communist guerillas as young as twelve. The audience found the
juxtaposition of images of gun-toting recruits with photos of the
same young people strumming guitars around a campfire particularly
poignant. |

Mr. Ventura opened the session with a rendition
of a song by Asin, a band popular at the time of the 1986 February
Revolution, whose lyrics contained revolutionary messages resisting
the repression of the Marcos government. This session presented the
audience with an informal look at Philippine history, music and customs,
with general information nuanced by personal accounts from the two
speakers. |

| Kazuma Momoi, photojournalist |
As well as talking about his experiences of Filippino
hospitality, Mr. Momoi gave advice about daily life, from eating customs
to how to use the toilet (in this case going into more detail than
some of the audience wished to know!). In other workshops he gave
the audience the benefit of his experience as a professional photographer,
which were popular among participants hoping to capture their own
impressions of this fascinating country. |
