Departure of the 37th World Cruise!
The ticker-tape farewell
At twelve noon Sunday, September 1st, 2002 Peace Boat departed on its 39th World Cruise loaded with over 600 participants and staff. The heat of the late summer day did nothing to quell the energy of the send-off ceremonies as friends and family turned out by the hundreds to wish those onboard a happy, safe, enlightening and purpose-led voyage. Performing for the ceremony was traditional Japanese drum group Tomoeikai who will serve as cultural ambassadors and entertainers for Peace Boat at the 18 ports of call in 17 countries Peace Boat will visit over its 100 day voyage.
Led by a volunteer Peace Guide a few days before departure the newly arrived International Students / Young Journalists tour Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, one of the most politically and historically controversial places in Asia as the symbolic center of the controversy over Japanese aggression in Asia in WWII and its representation in history books
Onboard are over 580 participants ranging in age from seven to 86 years old, coming from all walks of life. Among the number are eight young journalists and social communication specialists joining Peace Boat for half of the cruise, until Las Palmas, Spain. Onboard they will participate in an intensive scholarship study program on the relationship between conflict and the media, focusing on the countries from which they come; Serbia (two students), Bosnia, Colombia, India, Pakistan, Palestine and Israel, as well as educating participants about the conflicts from a first hand perspective.
The 15,000+ ton M/V Olvia, better known as the Peace Boat, sets sail on a voyage to build a better world, one ocean at a time
