| Fisher Sept.11th and
Alternatives to War |
 |
| Professor Fisher, a rational, not interest-oriented, voice for peace
|
Since the terrorist attacks in the US on September
11th, 2001, there has been a strong movement to provide an alternative
voice to how the conflict has been reported as well as alternative
strategies to ending the conflict itself. Peace Boat guest Dietrich
Fisher, co-director of the Transcend Peace Network and Professor at
Pace University in New York, looked at the goals of the US war on
terror, why it won't succeed and what alternative steps are necessary
for ending terror. In short, the US, as we have seen through its actions
and stated goals, has failed to recognize the nature of the attacks,
choose a strategy of unilateral military response instead of broad
cooperation (as different from coercion) and has generally failed
to address the roots of terrorism and base of support, instead focusing
on the more visible aspects like the perpetrators themselves. Professor
Fisher suggested that hope for the future lie in countries realizing
the importance of genuine cooperation and the emergence of a more
equal and just global society. A world that, for example, in solving
problems facing the world, would use cooperation and rational means
rather than believing that force is the only effective language with
which to communicate with the perpetrators of terror. |

| Yazzan, from Palestine, reading a poem about meeting Israeli soldiers
|
The six participants in the International Student Program were formally introduced to all onboard, using equal parts humor and seriousness to give us a clearer understanding of who these interesting people among us are and where they come from. The students are Jonny and Jenny, both from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Yazzan from Palestine, Itay from Israel, Sonja from Serbia and Sandra from Bosnia. The students showcased talents and talked about their lives in their home countries. For example, Itay told about joining the Isreali peace organization Peace Now after serving three years in the army while Sandra performed a form of fire dance she had been learning over the past year. Afterwards, students and audience moved out to the Neptune deck for games and a chance to get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere. |
