| Professor Takahashi Israel
and Palestine-Understanding the Fighting |
 |
| Professor Takahashi attributed much misunderstanding to media portrayal of the conflict, saying that broadcasting has effectively become, in terms of content, narrowcasting |
Professor Takahashi, a guest lecturer onboard from
Tokyo to Singapore, put to question the common perception of the war
between Israel and Palestine as being religious in nature, and proposed
to us a different possibility in this introductory lecture to the
conflict. After a brief explanation of the three religions present
in the conflict areas, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Professor
Takahashi proposed that it is not religious interpretation or belief
that is at the heart of the inability to find peace, but rather the
who is fighting over what reality. While access to and respect for
holy sites is a big factor, looking at the question of water rights,
or that the necessity for security and land applies to all people
regardless of religion, gives a much better understanding of the conflict.
He also criticized the respective leaders of the two lands, Sharon
and Arafat, as being the wrong people for finding peace, based on
history of brutality, in Sharon's case, and mismanagement and lack
of ability to lead in anything other than war, in Arafat's case. Certainly
for participants this was a provocative introduction to the Israel
Palestine conflict. |
