| Goran Vezic, a Peace Boat veteran |
For Goran Vezic, a Croatian journalist from the coastal town of Split joining Peace Boat for the tenth time, ships are an important part of life, and were a very important in his experiences during the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. During the war between Croatia and Yugoslavia most media was used as a propaganda weapon, depriving people of any trust-worthy or reliable source of news, and many journalists of the capacity to do their job. For 11 months in 1993, Goran was part of an off-shore news broadcasting project, Radio Boat, which reported news from neutral international sources and internal correspondents. Subsequently, the Serbian government called Radio Boat pro-Croatian and the Croatian government called them pro-Serbian - which they took to be a sign of success. With a history of using boats for the promotion of peace in the region, Goran posed the question; will the Adriatic Sea be a place for war ships or sailing ships? In this context, he suggested that in the future Peace Boat organize a campaign to demilitarize the Adriatic with the cooperation of all countries with relevant coastline. For Peace Boat this is a concrete example of where ideas for peace promotion are introduced with the help of our guest participants. |
