| Another September 11 - the day the world
changed for Chile |
As
Gabriella Zuniga told the story of Chile's past, it slowly became
clear to those in attendance that the presentation was more than just
a casual retelling. The lecture was a brief history of Chile, spanning
from when the country was first claimed by Spain in the 16th Century
to the dark events of 1973. It was entitled "Another September 11,"
a reference to the day when Pinochet's anti-socialist forces took
control of the government and Chilean citizens, especially political
activists, began disappearing. Zuniga and her husband were heavily
involved in the socialist movement at the time. - MORE |

| Mountains of ancient
peace - the beauty of Patagonia |
During
the fourth glacial period around 2 million years ago, the present
Patagonian region was covered with glaciers. Glacial erosion is responsible
for shaping the stunning pointed peaks of the Paine Mountain range
and the wild, barren mountains of Tierra del Fuego. To see these mountains
bathed in a red and purple haze during one of the region's spectacular
sunsets almost creates an illusion of fire - hence the name 'Land
of Fire'. The route Peace Boat takes from Cape Horn through the fjords
to Pulluche Bay on the Chilean West Coast offers some of the most
magnificent views seen anywhere in the world.- MORE |

| Donde Estan? - the question
of Chile's "disappeared" |
'Where
are they now, the missing sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and husbands
and wives that disappeared during Pinochet's rule in Chile?' This
question bears heavily on the minds of those left behind. One of these
is Gabriela Zuniga, whose husband was arrested and subsequently disappeared
in 1974, barely a year after Pinochet's CIA backed military coup overthrew
Salvadore Allende's democratically elected Socialist Party. She has
since been active as a PR spokesperson in AFDD (The Association of
Families of the Detained and Disappeared); an organisation dedicated
to finding out the truth about the fates of their missing family members.
