Eco Team - working onboard for an environmentally-friendly Peace Boat
The group of young volunteers that make up the Eco Team on board the 36th global voyage are working to create an eco-friendly environment on Peace Boat, and at the same time come up with proposals for concrete action for the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. Trying to combine study with fun, Eco Team has two main projects they are currently working on. The first is a solar-wind generator being used for the first time on Peace Boat and which has consequently become the visual symbol of the project. After a joint effort of fundraising and donation letter writing, Peace Boat succeeded in obtaining the generator from local manufacturer Zephyr. The inaugural event, which was also the generators first real test, was a popcorn party. The event, attended by over forty people was in itself educational and very successful in terms of making people more aware of the importance of using wind energy in everyday life. While the event was free, there are plans to sell the popcorn produced, with the money raised going to help pay for the maintenance of the solar-wind generator.
Various other eco-friendly events using wind and also solar energy have been planned for this cruise. These include music concerts, movie nights and a "solar cafe" is also in the pipeline. Apart from being lots of fun these events should also raise people's awareness of the importance of renewable energy as alternative energy sources. In the future Peace Boat is planning to expand its alternative energy program, increasing the number of solar-wind generators on board.
The other important current Eco Team project is active recycling of paper, plastic bottles and batteries. Recycled paper will be reused together with lavender and rosemary leaves to make postcards, streamers and other paper-based objects. Plastic bottles will be filled and used for making exercise weights as well as toys, which will be given away to children in countries Peace Boat visits on its voyages. Batteries will be taken back to Japan and will be recycled there. The Eco Team is another example of Peace Boat acting locally as it moves around the globe.
