| Tango - the romance of
Buenos Aires |
Inspired by Peace Boat's visit to Buenos Aires,
a Tango dance event was held onboard featuring plenty of music and
dancing, a quiz and some tantalising film footage from a Tango performance
at the famous Almacen Club in La Boca.
This old port area of Buenos Aires was the first stop for many immigrants
after their daunting voyages from Italy, Spain or Germany. The musical
influences of these nationalities were instrumental in the creation
of the Tango, which was first played using the bandeon (a German style
accordion), the flute and the banjo. Later, as the music and dance
gained popularity, piano, double bass and violin were added and also
singing. Tango nights in the bars of la Boca would often go on all
night and into the late morning hours.
By the late 19th century, the songs also started to become more important
with composers and musicians such as Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzola
on the rise, writing genre classics like "A Media Luz".
The music has undergone several transformations since the Tango's
first rudimentary appearance in the 1860s, but it's spirit and the
fiery, expressive moves that give voice to it have hardly changed
in 140 years.
"Tango is a sensual dance, which perfectly reflects the relationship
between man and woman," said Futoshi Sato, who together with Matsumi
Matsumura compered this very entertaining night. |
