 |
| Paul Saoke of IPPNW Kenya |
With the philosophy that HIV / AIDS is a global
development and sustainability issue, Peace Boat in partnership with
the Association of Physicians and Medical Workers for Social Responsibility
(Kenya's IPPNW branch) held an NGO Forum onboard. The forum is intended
as a parallel contribution to the preparatory process of the WSSD
(World Summit for Sustainable Development) to be held in Johannesburg
in September. Attended by experts from Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia
the forum tackled the issue of HIV/AIDS in Africa from a global perspective.
Report to be uploaded shortly. |

| One Memorable Moment |
NGO
Forum participant Mildred Mpundu of Zambia, an award-winning journalist
specialising in AIDS-related issues writes on her Peace Boat experiences:
"Scarce are the moments in life that leave impressions so hard to
erase from one's mind. So many times we take life for granted. Life
on Peace Boat is one of those rare times that brought me closer to
the sufferings of those far less privileged than myself". - MORE |

| Introduction to HIV -
the Global University |
Peace
Boat's Global University - the world's first floating Peace University
- ran its second unit on the questions and problems surrounding HIV.
The introductory lecture, by Doctor Tatsuo Hayashi, gave a run-down
of the basic facts and facilitated discussion amongst the participants
on their perceptions of HIV and AIDS. The glaring inequality in treatment
available between the developed and developing world was highlighted.

| Eco Musician |
| Peace Boat held a reggae party to celebrate its arrival
in Madagascar. The music jamboree is the culmination of a number of
African music evenings and jam sessions initiated and inspired by
Achille Luc, guest speaker, self-styled eco-musician and reggae fan
from the Seychelles. This energetic artist and environmentalist is
onboard Peace Boat for the fourth time. - MORE |

| Peace Ball visits Nosy Be |
| Peace Ball's second event of the 36th Cruise was an
exchange with a group of lively Nosy Be high school students. The
day began with the students coming aboard the Olvia and taking a tour
of the ship; this included an impromptu basketball game on the sports
deck, a quick visit to a few cabins, and a buffet lunch, where it
became clear that chopsticks and tofu were a bit of novelty in Madagascar.

| "Do it yourself"
project by Cape Town's homeless |
Since
the abolishment of Apartheid everybody has the right to live wherever
they like. However, because of the high influx of people from rural
areas to the city, the number of the homeless people and people living
in shacks is increasing all the time. This is the situation from which
the 'Do it yourself' project evolved as a means for homeless people
to act together in order to improve their housing situation. We visited
the Derek Hanekom Centre, which is owned by the South African Homeless
People's Federation (SAHPF). - MORE |

| Langa High School - a
cultural exchange with Cape Town's future |
The
beautiful Waterfront complex where the Olvia docked for its three-day
sojourn in South Africa is a tribute to modern convenience - English
pubs with satellite television, internet cafes with blazing connection
speeds, burger joints with pre-fab body molded plastic seating...Participants
in the cultural exchange between Peace Boat and Langa High School
discovered that an entirely different set of conditions exist just
a thirty-minute bus ride away. Located in Langa, one of Cape Town's
first black townships, the high school has a 65-year history of making
do with the bare essentials. - MORE |
