Another September 11 - the day the world changed for Chile
As Gabriella Zuniga told the story of Chile's past, it slowly became clear to those in attendance that the presentation was more than just a casual retelling. The lecture was a brief history of Chile, spanning from when the country was first claimed by Spain in the 16th Century to the dark events of 1973. It was entitled "Another September 11," a reference to the day when Pinochet's anti-socialist forces took control of the government and Chilean citizens, especially political activists, began disappearing. Zuniga and her husband were heavily involved in the socialist movement at the time. - MORE
Mountains of ancient peace - the beauty of Patagonia
During the fourth glacial period around 2 million years ago, the present Patagonian region was covered with glaciers. Glacial erosion is responsible for shaping the stunning pointed peaks of the Paine Mountain range and the wild, barren mountains of Tierra del Fuego. To see these mountains bathed in a red and purple haze during one of the region's spectacular sunsets almost creates an illusion of fire - hence the name 'Land of Fire'. The route Peace Boat takes from Cape Horn through the fjords to Pulluche Bay on the Chilean West Coast offers some of the most magnificent views seen anywhere in the world.- MORE
