| Sep 29th - Morning Tai-chi
/ Norio Osawa |
Dawn
under a rising sun is a good time to be alive. That is the feeling
one gets participating in Norio Osawa's 6am sunrise Tai-chi class,
though even to call it a class is a stretch. Every morning a certain
kind of people rise early for the half-hour session, and for the rest
of the day seem a bit more peaceful than the rest of us fo0r it. Mr.
Osawa is a regular Peace Boat guest, working with participants and
often frazzled staff to find composure and put a little more calm
into our lives as well as teach us about alternative medicines and
techinques. Whether participating or just watching the sunrise while
people become soundlessly graceful below, thereafter one finds a different
energy permeating the day. |

| Japanese ODA / Kanbe
Shunpei |
Dr.
Kanbe took to the stage again with black humor and dry wit to describe
the shady relationship involving the Kenyan Government, Japanese industry,
local people in both countries and various development projects concerning
how people go about the business of ODA, or Official Development Assistance.
Dr. Kanbe's lecture reflected the ample supply of material pointing
to mismanagement and backroom cooperation between government and industry
is administering ODA. Though not always the case, the common result
is the concerns for local people and environment coming second, corruption
and bureaucratic inefficiency coming first. |

| Night with the IS / International
Students |
With
a dose of embarrassment and two doses of humor, participants were
shown a lighter side of the six International Students riding Peace
Boat with them. Rather than questions about the conflicts in the countries
from which they come or about the NGO activity they are involved with,
in a "Fun with the IS night," questions were more apt to investigate
embarrassing moments, pick-up lines, or secrets revealed in a home
video production about life on Peace Boat from an 'International'
perspective.Text and photos by Stacy Hughes |
