Festivities began with an act from the Entertainers for Peace, Javier and Fernando Martin, who joined Peace Boat from Dublin until the end of the voyage. Their surrealist performance represented the four elements - wind, water, fire and earth.
A range of fundraising stalls were organized by participants, including one where fair trade coffee and food could be purchased or exchanged. Another stall was selling second-hand goods such as coat-hangers and flasks which were donated by participants.
Many people discussed important social issues including sustainable living and the disparity between the rich and poor throughout the world.
Messages were written on pieces of paper shaped like leaves and and posted on a cardboard sculpture of a tree. This tree represents the growth of ideas among participants on how to better protect the environment.
Earth Day helped people to think about their connection to nature and how they can live in a way that is more environmentally friendly.
