Quiet sobs mixed with squeals of delight as Peace Boat’s 67th Global Voyage pulled away from Yokohama Port at noon on August 27. A clear blue sky and warm weather provided the perfect setting for participants to sip champagne and shout goodbyes to family and friends waving from the pier.

With close to 500 participants on board, the 67th Global Voyage will visit 21 countries over 108 days. The voyage is the second “Global Voyage for a Nuclear Free World” and follows the successful launch of Peace Boat’s Hibakusha Project for nuclear disarmament in 2008. Hibakusha is the Japanese name for the survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Speaking at the departure ceremony, Hibakusha Tanaka Shunsaburo used his experience in Hiroshima to underscore the importance of the voyage’s theme of securing the “blue and beautiful earth for the future.”
The 84 year old is one of ten Hibakusha on board who will be sharing their experience with younger participants and interacting with local communities in various ports of call.
In addition to the Hibakusha Project, the 67th voyage will also explore a number of other urgent global themes, including: poverty eradication, peace and reconciliation and alternatives to globalization.
