64th Voyage Web Reporter Profile – Amber Bard |
|
|
Amber Bard, the web reporter for Peace Boat's 64th voyage, first became interested in responsible tourism when she participated in an ecotour of Belize seven years ago. Homestays with Mayan families and snorkeling through one of the most beautiful and endangered reefs in the world proved to her that a vacation doesn't have to be a break from daily life, but rather a chance to engage in the daily lives of others.
Her interest in other people's experiences and the connections between different nationalities continued to grow at the University of Michigan, where she studied the influence of history and culture on colonial literature. Directly after graduating from college, Amber moved to Tokyo, where she still lives a year and a half later. At first, the city felt exotic and overwhelming, but now it feels just like home. She learned that fearlessly indulging in new experiences and forming relationships with others are the keys to feeling comfortable in foreign situations. That knowledge is sure to come in handy while visiting ports of call on the 64th voyage.
While teaching preschool at an international school, Amber worked as a freelance writer for Tokyo area magazines and studied Japanese in her free time. In the fall of last year, she became active with the Second Harvest organization, which prepares and delivers homemade food to Tokyo's homeless citizens.
She is truly excited to be a part of the Peace Boat organization, and hopes that the web reports will allow people unable to be on the ship to learn and participate right along with the members onboard. |
