Adam Mahowald, the Web Reporter for the 60th Global Voyage, grew up canoeing the lake country of his home state, Minnesota, in the United States. During these journeys north, he developed a deep appreciation for both the outdoors and the idea of 'the journey.' Adam has worked as a canoe expedition guide leading trips across the lakes and down the rivers of the Canadian Shield, and prioritizes living a life in close proximity to the natural world.
After graduating from college with a degree in art and a specialty in ceramics, Adam made his way to Japan in 2004 for the first time with the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) programme. This experience catalyzed an interest in Japanese language and cultural studies, which Adam continues to pursue seriously. He has lived in Oita, Mie, and Aichi prefectures.
In 2007, Adam joined the 56th Global Voyage for Peace as a GET (Global English and Espanol Training) teacher. Throughout the voyage he was witness to some of the many wonders of the natural world, confirming his love for the outdoors and a desire to protect the environment and its natural beauty for the future. He was alarmed by the apparent instability of the local ecology in many parts of the world, but Adam firmly believes that to effect change in the world by doing the things that one can do is a good place to start.
On the 60th Voyage, Adam hopes to encounter and report on the environmental situation of the Southern Hemisphere, and to investigate the social, economical, and political factors which have led to the geographic disparity of wealth and resource consumption in the world today. With Peace Boat he hopes to help bring the world one step closer to peace, and to economic and ecological equality.
“The longer I contemplate this world of living things and look at the earth itself, the more I am convinced there can never be an end to wonder and awareness, and that one of the real tragedies in life is to waste time when there is so much to see and learn.”
