Peace Boat welcomed guest educators Michael Mangena, a junior high school principal from the Soweto district, and Naoko Tsuyama, a representative from the Japan International Volunteer Center (JVC) in South Africa, to join the 60th voyage between the ports of Richards Bay and Cape Town in South Africa. They lectured on the history of Johannesburg’s Soweto district, which was segregated for 40 years under apartheid, and the reality of post-apartheid Soweto and South Africa today.

A Latin vibe buzzed through the ship during the traverse of the Atlantic Ocean thanks to Afro-Brazilian percussion virtuoso Francis Silva, who joined the 60th voyage from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro. A native of Brazil but long-term resident of Japan, Francis established the annual Asakusa Carnival in Tokyo, the world’s second largest Samba carnival outside of Brazil. While onboard, Francis led dancing and drumming workshops, and organized a Samba carnival involving over 150 participants.

Midway across the Atlantic, 60th voyage participants filled the ship’s top deck on a clear night to view a total lunar eclipse. Participant Mitsuo Muto took this photograph shortly before the moon was totally eclipsed by the earth’s shadow.

Using coins, cards, rings and rope, magicians Masahiro Yanagida and Shun Kanamori dazzled Peace Boat during their onboard performances. During workshops, they taught participants sleight of hand magic tricks, and lectured on astronomy and constellations in the southern sky.

Students participated in a “Human Scrabble” word game during the GET Language Olympics, an onboard event put on by the GET (Global English and Español Training) programme, Peace Boat’s onboard language school. GET students and teachers gathered on the ship’s pool deck to compete in a variety of language games as a fun way of using English and Spanish outside of the classroom in a fun and relaxed setting.
