Swinging into Polynesian Night
Across the Pacific Ocean, Peace Boat participants have been engaging with Polynesian culture. Polynesian Night was an opportunity for those who had learnt Polynesian dance and music to perform onboard. Participants wooed the audience with Hula dancing, ukulele, and Poi and closed the show with a powerful Maori Haka, Te Waka Rangimarie, which was written especially for Peace Boat. |

Cooling off at the Summer Festival
As Peace Boat sailed south into the Pacific summer, the mood was ripe for a summer festival. The sun came to the party and performers thrilled the audience with Taiko (traditional Japanese drumming) and Soran Bushi (Japanese dance). To ward off the scorching heat, a shaved ice eating contest was held and, come nightfall graceful girls competed in the Yukata (summer Kimono) contest. At the end of the show the microphone was handed over to anyone who had a message to call out to the sea. Participants young and old shouted anything they wished for, from “Love” to “Freedom.” |

Soccer Tournament Madness
The 59th Peace Boat Voyage’s soccer tournament was battled out between 16 mixed teams. Participants of all abilities competed fairly in a spirit of “serious fun.” The winning teams from the group round fought it out in the knockout stages before rain forced the final between two teams of participants, Nitta and Wakashimazu, to be declared a draw. Exhibition matches were also played between Peace Boat crew, volunteer staff and an All Star participants’ team, with goals galore. |

Big Mom + JI = Jacoustic
Peace Boat welcomed on Kansai musicians Big Mom and JI in Tahiti. Although both accomplished musicians in their own right, they joined forces especially for Peace Boat and are performing together under the name Jacoustic. The duo, who will stay onboard until Yokohama, the last port, are performing a number of Gospel influenced acoustic sets. They whetted the appetite of their new fans with their fantastic opening night performance. |

Celebrating Peace Day
While a large part of the daily activities that go on onboard Peace Boat are related to peace, December 21 was a special day dedicated solely to peace and issues relating to it. Participants organised a myriad of events related to their experiences onboard and in port. Older participants discussed with younger participants their experience of World War II while others contributed to the Article 9 exhibition that was on display that day. Creative participants also made a poster for display where people could write messages of love, peace and their hopes for the future. |
