Peace Boat participants helped to sort through hundreds of educational items such as pens, notebooks and scissors as part of our United People’s Alliance programme. These items were delivered to the street children’s centre in Da Nang, Viet Nam to be used in their educational and vocational training. Materials were collected for over 1,000 children. Staff member Kaori Sawada explained: “We try to give materials that people really want, by asking our local partners what is needed.”

World Heritage specialist Kazuo Kido joined the 58th Voyage between Yokohama and Singapore to give participants a unique insight into the history of our journey as we traced the Ocean Silk Road. The full route stretches from Japan to Holland, both ports in which the Peace Boat will call. Goods were first transported along sections of this route 4,500 years ago. Mr. Kido also passed on his knowledge – “beyond the guide books” – of the places we were to visit, from the ruined stone monuments of My Son, Viet Nam to the Roman trading centres of Cochin, India.

Onboard musicians, Tokyo Gyangstar, trained and led a group of 206 singers during a special on deck performance under the night sky. Ranging from five to 90 years of age, Happy Star as they called themselves, sang and danced to three songs including the cheery Beatles’ track ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ and a couple written by Tokyo Gyangstar during the 35th and 44th voyages. Shouts of “encore” persuaded the newly formed group to repeat their opening number, but the appreciative audience will now have to wait until we reach New York for a second performance, when the group will hold their next concert.

A smorgasbord of fantastic fruits was offered at a specially arranged party for participants on June 21. With over ten different types of weird and wonderful fruits, the deck of the boat was filled with those eager to sample some of the more exotic varieties, including dragon fruit, the furry rambutan and gigantic jackfruit. The notorious durian fruit was also on offer. While the strong smell is too much for many, others crave the garlic-like taste of this delicacy. Beyond the treats for the tastebuds, participants could also feast their eyes on an array of skilful fruit carvings and sculptures.

As we headed towards the lush state of Kerala in India, Mr. Chihiro Saito - an expert in NGOs in the country – joined the ship to show us how NGO work has helped to improve social wellbeing despite high levels of poverty. Through education, cooperative working and the empowerment of women, Kerala enjoys some of the highest literacy and life expectancy rates across India. Other states have tried to learn from the success of the ‘Kerala Development Model,’ as well as those attending our Global University programme who also got the chance to visit some of this work in action when we docked at Cochin.

Towards the end of World War II, attacks from the US Army made Okinawa the only battle front on mainland Japan. In just over four weeks of fighting, more than 200,000 people lost their lives, including American and Japanese soldiers as well as local civilians. Sixty-two years later, Peace Boat participants came together to commemorate Okinawa Memorial Day. A minute’s silence was held to remember the victims of this tragedy.

Do you believe in magic? Professional magicians Mr.Yanagida and Misty Myu certainly believe in its power to entertain young and old alike, which is why they shared the secrets of their trade with Peace Boat participants. In this photo, Misty Myu (left) shows one participant how to make handkerchiefs disappear – as well as his face! The two magicians hope their new students will use these skills to amuse those they meet in Cochin, India and the children of the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan.
