Pyuma are indigenous to Taiwan and with a population of approximately 10,000, or 265 families, their ethnic customs survive by being passed down from generation to generation. On the eve of arriving in Taiwan, Peace Boat held an evening to honor these traditions and to remember an unforgettable friend. On the 51st Global Voyage, musician Isao was a guest onboard, after a tragic accident in 1976 left him a paraplegic at the age of 26. Isao taught himself how to compose music by using computer software and released his first CD in 1994. Inspired by his music and messages of peace, Isao was invited to tour many countries attending peace conferences including the Okinawa Summit in 1999.
On April 15, 2006 Isao passed away, since then his sister Lin Ching Mei, along with her family, have wanted to come onboard Peace Boat and perform in the exact same venue her brother once did in his memory and as a celebration of his life. Pyuma music, dance and original music composed by Isao were performed, and to the delight of many participants they were taught an aboriginal dance and chant. |

In addition to guest speakers onboard, staff and participants are encouraged organize events and workshops to share their skills and interests with one another. An example of this was the meishi, personal name card, making art project, facilitated by Peace Boat staff members Matt and Emi. Artistic ability was not a prerequisite nor was language a barrier; participants were able to express themselves using magazine images to make collages. |
