Le Ly Hayslip, author, mother, activist and humanitarian, her book has moved millions and Oliver Stone made “Heaven and Earth” based on her life story as a woman from a small village who witnessed first hand the horrors of the Viet Nam war and her eventual escape. During times of great adversity she found inner willpower and ways to survive, to rebuild her life and has become an inspiration to many. Le Ly has worked with politicians such as Bill Clinton and John Kerry to bridge the relationship between USA and Viet Nam post war. |

In 1999 Le Ly Hayslip founded Global Village Foundation, a non-profit organization focusing on humanitarian relief and the promotion of nonviolence and peace. Its mission is to fund construction for schools and vocational training facilities in rural Viet Nam to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy while preserving the heritage of village life. Since its inception projects such as schools, hospitals and micro-credit loans have been successfully implemented but Le Ly is always looking for fresh and innovative ideas for new initiatives. |

In 2005 Le Ly Hayslip went back to Thailand where ‘Heaven and Earth’ was filmed because this area was devastated by the tsunami and Ms. Hayslip went back to help with the clean up and reconstruction of this region. This is when she met Ms. Oil of the Kradanhok storytelling team, and found the inspiration for an educational scheme called The Portable Mobile Library Project, rotating “moving libraries” that are delivered to rural elementary and high schools modeled after a project conceived by Professor Somboon Singkamana from Thailand. |

Global Village Foundation worked with carpenters, publishers, teachers, librarians, and principals in Da Nang city to create, distribute, and manage these libraries. Teachers were taught how to use these libraries in their curriculum as well as how to motivate students into reading. |

These libraries can be alternated through schools in a particular district so students have new books to read every few months, this reduces the cost of book duplication while increasing the number of children who will have access to read and learn. Global Village Foundation has partnered with Japanese, Singaporean, and US/International colleges and universities to recruit teachers and educators as volunteers to teach reading, writing and to share stories about peace and nonviolence.
