On January 10, Peace Boat participants gathered on the front deck of the ship to watch it enter the first lock of the Panama Canal. To circumvent many of the excavation difficulties that were present during the building the building of the Suez Canal, engineers of the Panama Canal developed a system to help lift boats over shallow waters. Passing through the canal took approximately 13 hours. Panama has decided to add a third lane to the canal to allow more ships and wider oil tankers to pass through at once, a plan than will facilitate the passage of cargo but also destroy some of the natural jungle area around the canal.

Venezuelan diplomat Yelitza Ventura, tries out the captain's wheel of Peace Boat's TSS the Topaz. Ms. Ventura joined the 55th voyage from Venezuela to Japan to learn more about Peace Boat's activities. At 27, she reflects Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez's campaign to put more young people at the helm of important positions in the country. “There are many capable young people, and our country is giving young people the opportunity to demonstrate what they know,” Ms. Ventura said. Equality between men and women is guaranteed in Venezuela's new Bolivarian Revolution Constitution, so many women can be found in important positions in Venezuela, she added. Asked what she thinks is most important in her job, she replied “Responsibility. And friends.”

Ms. Kikuchiyo Kokontei was the first female rakugo storyteller promoted to the position of Shinuchi (best story teller) in Japan. She has been teaching raguko to participants on Peace Boat's 55th voyage, and has also held talks about her work as a life adviser to jail inmates in Japan. On the ship, she was voted Prime Minister in a mock election in which she advocated for incorporating rakugo lessons into public schools, and banning radio and TV broadcasting between 6 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. in order to bring back family and community communication.

Proving that ecology and glamour can go together, nearly 100 participants on the 55th voyage worked together for two months to stage a spectacular eco-friendly fashion show on board. Parts of this dress were made from aluminum cans and old T-shirts.

The fashion show on board also gave participants a chance to raise awareness about the perniciousness of sweat shops around the world. Nike, Disney, and Gap are three of the top names in fashion that pay workers the lowest wages. Although a Disney T-shirts sells for about $17.99, workers receive only approximately 15 cents per shirt. Meanwhile, the CEO of Disney earns about $63,000 per hour. “These corporations that have so much power—some more power than countries – should take responsibility for the conditions in which their clothing is make,” said one fashion show volunteer.
