Adept at aikido, journalist Chihiro Ito demonstrates a self-defense technique for participants on Peace Boat. “Knowing these techniques has allowed me to enter areas that I probably wouldn't have entered if I didn't know how to defend myself,” he said.

Brazilian musician Francis Silva gives a live concert featuring various percussion instruments. “All of nature is my teacher,” he says. “Even the centipede is my teacher. I studied the movements of a centipede and incorporated it into my music, so that's why I have techniques unlike other musicians,” he said. Mr. Silva was on board for a week teaching participants how to samba, use percussion instruments, and listen to their own rhythm.

Newcomers to capoeira demonstrate the techniques they have learned in only a short time on the ship. Capoeira originated in Brazil by African slaves seeking to protect themselves from violence. Completely non-contact and non-aggressive, it combines music and dance with self-defense movements.

Former street children in Brazil have been given new opportunities in life thanks to an organization called Republic of Emaus, a counter partner of Peace Boat that teaches children how to sing, dance, and use percussion instruments. A dozen children, including this talented young hip-hop rapper, were invited on the ship to give performances.

Young people from Brazil who practice taiko, Japanese drumming, give a performance on Peace Boat on New Years Eve. To help support the group and encourage their maintenance of cultural heritage, Peace Boat donated two large drums to them.

The 55th's Voyage youngest participant experiences his first mochitsuki (rice cake pounding) on the deck of the ship on New Years Day. Mochitsuki is a traditional Japanese New Years custom, usually performed when the weather is cold and gray. As the ship was in Brazil at the time, many enjoyed trying custom for the first time in sunny, tropical weather.
