Two young music producers from New Zealand joined the 54th voyage from Montego Bay, Jamaica until Honolulu, Hawai’i. First invited onboard the 52nd voyage, Thomas Voyce and Simon Rycroft are the producers of a “Rhombus,” a music collective incorporating a wide scope of musicians, sounds and influences into “community-building” music. |

As winners of the 2003 Best Album award in New Zealand, their fresh sound and talents brought a wave of creativity onboard, pulling musicians of every genre and caliber from out of cabins to participate in Rhombus workshops. Viola players accompanied young rappers, ukulele, djembe and sanshin. It was clear that music is a powerful tool for community building onboard the Peace Boat. |

By setting up a studio in their cabin (a.k.a. “Studio 704”) and a portable recording studio in the ship’s theater, they utilized electronic mixing technologies to fuse participants’ talents into cosmic orchestras and multicultural grooves.
Some of the tracks recorded focused on the importance of protecting and promoting Article 9 (the peace clause) of Japan’s constitution, and concern about the Rokkasho nuclear re-processing plant the Japanese government is operating, issues of great importance to global peace which Peace Boat is working closely on. Working with young musicians to better understand and make music about such issues was a core goal of Simon and Thomas’ time onboard.
