Sports Day |

Sports Day is an indispensable part of Japanese culture. Every year before summer vacation, schools from preschool to university across Japan take part in this tradition. It is a day when the entire community comes together to share in the festivity and to cheer on their children. |

Participants onboard the 54th voyage spent many days preparing for this special event. They could be seen painting team flags, practicing some of the games or team cheers, and building team spirit. |

Sunshine flooded the pool deck on the day and participants of all ages came dressed in their team colors; red, black, white, yellow or blue (depending on what region of Japan they are from). |

The day was sated with a variety of games including the giant jump-rope competition, tug-of-war, beanbag toss, and an obstacle course. All teams presented their team cheers; some of them included colorful cross-dressing routines, while others were more regimented. All of them had been diligently practiced and revealed strong team pride. |

After a day full of laughter, sweat and tears, the blue team was announced the winning team and received a trophy and an all-you-can-drink ticket for Namihei (Peace Boat’s outdoor restaurant) for each member. All teams celebrated a job well done and that night team leaders gave speeches of gratitude as participants reflected on an exciting day. |
