Dublin – New York
In the long eight-day stretch at sea, Peace Boat participants kept themselves busy between Dublin and New York. Along with organizing self-planned events such as open mics and HIV/AIDS education workshops, they learnt about nuclear disarmament issues, geared up for the Sports Festival, and studied up on New York's history and culture.

Nuclear Disarmament

From New York on, Global University (GU) will be focusing their second unit on “A world free from war and nuclear weapons.” GU Coordinator and Nuclear Disarmament Specialist, Akira Kawasaki set the tone of the second unit by holding a six-part lecture on nuclear disarmament. Akira shared that the United States' recent move to create new mini-nukes and use them in conventional warfare has set the disarmament community on high alert. Though Japan's constitution currently prevents them from producing any nuclear weapons, Akira warned participants that Japan is merely hiding behind the US and its military power and that it is important to uphold the pacifist clause in the Japanese constitution.

Sports Festival

For weeks now, participants have been preparing for the Sports Day event on June 1st. Over 500 participants, divided in to teams by their astrological star sign, took part in the day's festivities. The team captains worked hard to raise spirits and involve people by walking around in costumes and making large banners and signs. Unlike a typical sports days of track and field which only tests one's athletic abilities, Peace Boat Sports Day's activities tested creative, mental, and physical strengths as well. Folding origami cranes out of 2m paper, three-legged races, team vs. team paper-scissor-rock games were just a few of what was played that day.

The competition was intense. With each team winning bonus points for their level of spirit, the Blue Team took the lead with 2001 points. The Yellow Team was only 40 points behind. The prize: an one hour all-you-can-drink at the Japanese bar Namihei. Here, Blue Team captain Mosa cheers his team on before the final competition.
Sexual Minorities

In workshop on sexual minorities, Global English Teacher Nick Logan shared how he came out to his family and the challenges he has faced as a gay male. In a short power point presentation, participants learned that gay and lesbians couples are legally allowed to marry in Canada, the Netherlands, and Spain while in other countries being gay is punishable by death. Nick shared, “ I did this workshop because I wanted create a safe space onboard and for people to be more open and comfortable with the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender community. ”
America Day
image
On the eve of Peace Boat's arrival to New York, the GET teachers from the United States played a mock-version of America's most popular TV quiz show: Jeopardy. With Quiz Master Beth Hillman in charge of the technical quiz presentation, Levi Jacobs posed as game show host Alex Trebec and read the questions. Danette Lambert and Meredith Wutz checked answers and tallied scores. Participants, divided into groups of five or more, scrambled to answer questions such as: Who is the King of Rock and Roll? And How many Burroughs are there in New York? American Day ended with a night of good 'ol' American Rock'n'Roll at Sports Bar.
