Peace Boat began it's European section of the 53rd Voyage at the beginning of May. Stopping in Piraeus, Catania, Tripoli, Bilbao, London, Bergen and Dublin, participants visited ancient historic sites and experienced the diversity of European culture. Onboard, they prepared for their port arrivals by studying up on history and current social and political affairs.
Wrapping up the Middle East section of the voyage Guest Educator Achin Vanaik from India joined Peace Boat from Catania to London. A specialist in international relations and world politics, Achin lectured about nuclear issues, Middle East politics and US foreign policy. At Global University seminars, he gave his perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. In his lectures on nuclear weapons disarmament, Achin urged Peace Boat participants to persevere with their important work of spreading peace. “Japan is the only country that has suffered from a nuclear attack, it has to to take its message of peace and the horror of nuclear weapons and remind the world not to have them,” he said. |

He also spoke in depth about the Basque desire for recognition and autonomy and the conflict between ETA and the Spanish government. The majority of Basque people condemn their actions and recognize there is an need to end the violence. Just this past March, a ceasefire agreement was signed between the ETA and Spanish government. Inigo said, “I think most people are hoping for a peaceful future.” |

On May 23rd, the TSS Topaz sailed through 200km of the Norwegian fjord Sogne Fjorden. Glaciers carved deep grooves into coastlines, creating a rugged landscape that later filled with water. The Topaz sailed as far as the little town Flam before turning around. People spent their time on the upper deck enjoying their beautiful surroundings. They took photos and sketched the scenery while drinking hot cocoa. |
