Shuichi Endo, expert on the island state of Tuvalu, came onboard to share with participants his knowledge on the environmental degradation occurring in this south pacific country. As we will have called on four south pacific islands – Rapa Nui, Tahiti, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea – during our 52nd global voyage, several of his research findings with regards to environmental issues are comparably applicable. Thomas Voyce and Simon Rycroft, members of the New Zealand recording artist Rhombus, joined our global voyage as guests onboard from Tahiti to Fiji. Mixing an eclectic sound comprised of reggae beats, electronic sounds, ethno-music samples, along with inspirational vocals, Rhombus’ music delivers an explosive burst of uplifting tunes. While onboard, besides awing audiences with live performances, Thomas and Simon recorded a number of sound bites from amateur musicians who happened to be onboard as Peace Boat participants, and hope to include such recordings in future productions. Throughout the 13-week voyage, several participants make time in their daily schedules to partake in an interest which perhaps can not be achieved back in Japan. During this voyage, sanshin courses have been organized which primarily focus on playing techniques for the three-string instrument from Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture. The course has rendered a number of near virtuosos who presented a concert using the snakeskin-covered instrument which is sometimes said to resemble a banjo. Photo: Stacy Hughes. |
