Suva, Fiji – Protecting the Japanese and Fijian constitutions
Members from the 51st Voyage “Association to Protect Article 9” protest against constitutional revision in front of the ship as it docked in the port of Suva.
When Peace Boat arrived in Suva on December 2nd, several participants joined forces with Fijian counterparts in a joint protest against potential changes to both the Constitutions of Fiji and Japan.
Peace Boat participants sought to draw attention to the need for protection and promotion of Japan’s Article 9, which is a clause prohibiting Japan from waging war. At the same time, they also showed support for the protection of Section 38(2)(a) of the Fijian Constitution – which guarantees equal treatment based on sexual orientation, and is currently under threat of being removed.

Young and old Peace Boat participants showed solidarity with Fijian locals, calling for “consultation before change” and the “protection of Article 38”.
Local media, including the three main newspapers in Fiji and FM radio covered the joint action staged by Peace Boat and the Fiji NGO Coalition for Human Rights.
