Artista Global Festival
An all day global awareness event called the ‘Artista Global Festival’ was held onboard Peace Boat between Rapa Nui and Tahiti to celebrate art, ecology and peace. Participants got creative by helping to make various kinds of art and craft, some of which were exhibited inside the ship and also sold to raise funds for various partner NGOs. There was also a flea market and silent auction consisting of items purchased in various ports that participants either donated or sold off in return for receiving local currency, called “peace” which they could then spend at the “Eco Café” and drink organic, fair trade coffee from Brazil and Ecuador. |

Participants were able to learn about many different countries by visiting country booths, where they joined in cultural activities and games. Entertainment included a New Zealand poi demonstration and Peruvian music instrumental display, which were performed throughout the day by both participants and staff.
Many people helped to paint a Peace banner, which was donated to the locals of a village in Papua New Guinea, when Peace Boat visited Rabaul in early December. |

A taste of Rapa Nui Onboard
After Peace Boat’s visit to beautiful Rapa Nui (also known as Easter Island), 30 members of Rapa Nui culture group Heimana came onboard the ship to share their unique identity and musical talent. After delighting participants with a lively performance which highlighted Rapa Nui’s strong Polynesian connection, members were able to enjoy a night socializing with new friends. |

Auction for Aid
Peace Boat participants opened their hearts and their wallets to support the victims of two horrific natural disasters of 2005: Hurricane Katrina in the southern region of the USA and the earthquake in Kashmir - Pakistan. Through an onboard fundraising event, a wide range of goods and services were auctioned, including a day with the Captain of the ship, music lessons, and the right to choose one’s favorite movies to be screened in the cinema.

GET Speech Competition
Students of Peace Boat’s English/Espanol Training (GET) programme challenged their language and public speaking skills by taking part in the GET speech competition. Seventy-one students entered, presenting a two-minute speech to a large audience in either Spanish or English. Pictured: Toshio Takami gives an impressive speech entitled: “Toshi and English”, in which he spoke of his experience learning English onboard Peace Boat. Proving that it is never too late to take on a new language, he had made a pledge to himself to begin learning English on his 60th birthday, and began the challenge by enrolling in GET classes onboard. |

AIDS Day Awareness
A series of events were held onboard to commemorate World AIDS Day on December 1st, including discussions about sex education in schools around the world, and workshops on safe sex.
Participants also had the chance to hand paint T-shirts with messages of hope, which were then auctioned. The money raised was donated to MU-JERES, an non-profit organization founded by Peace Boat Staff member, Emilie McGlone, which promotes sustainable living, access to health care and education, and raising awareness of human rights and women’s issues around the world. |
