Lazaro is a choreographer and professor of Afro Cuban folklore. The director of a dance company called “Pinos Nuevos”, he teaches his unique methods in Cuba and around Europe. Jose studied dance and percussion at the Cuban National Art School, as well as part of Lazaro’s dance troupe. They have both performed in many countries around Europe and Latin America.
During their time onboard, Lazaro and Jose delighted Peace Boat participants with a range of Latin American dance techniques, including salsa, casino, rumba, mambo and Cha Cha.
Daily classes in a range of dance styles were taught, for beginners and intermediates, including the hugely popular salsa classes, held on the ship’s outdoor decks.

After a week of practice, participants had the chance to show off their new moves in a “Latin Night” onboard Peace Boat. Hundreds turned out to enjoy the entertainment, in which several dozen participants of all ages took part.
In Havana, Cuba, the pair joined around 200 participants and many local Cubans in a Salsa Festival. Several well-known salsa and jazz bands performed, and various speeches of good will and solidarity were made by both Peace Boat and hosts from local counterpart organizations, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). |
