Fruit Fiesta
Dressed for the occasion, hundreds of participants came to Peace Boat’s fruit party to enjoy the sweet fruits of Southeast Asia as the ship started its crossing of the Indian Ocean from Singapore. Among the treats were star fruit, papaya, guava, mango, durian, coconut, melons and fruit cocktails.

International Peace Day
September 21 marked the United Nations International Day of Peace to appeal for a global ceasefire and non-violence. Peace Boat participants wrote messages of friendship and peace in many different languages to create a peace poster and presented it to Seychellois friends from the International Peace and Friendship Commission.

Books for Africa
Peace Boat volunteer Natasha Marois tells Peace Boat participants about a fundraising project initiated by teachers from Peace Boat’s Global English Teaching (GET) programme onboard. Hundreds of children’s picture books in English were collected in Vancouver, Canada in cooperation with one of Peace Boat’s counterpart organizations. These books have been sold to Peace Boat participants, who then write a personal message in them. When Peace Boat arrives in Kenya on September 24 the books will be donated to the WEMA Centre, a refuge for young girls in Mombasa.

With a wide grin typical of Seychellois people, a local woman from Mahe Island - the biggest of the Seychelles 115 islands - enjoys a day mixing with Peace Boat participants.

Remembering the Tsunami
The devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004 shocked the world and resulted in the biggest humanitarian relief effort in history. However nine months on the tragedy has faded from media headlines, and therefore many people’s minds. Peace Boat staff who were in affected areas during and after the tsunami shared personal stories and updates with Peace Boat participants.

Peace Ball – Cultural exchange through soccer
A group of Peace Boat participants spent their day in the Seychelles playing friendly soccer games with a local team of young Seychellois. The local team won, then were invited back onto Peace Boat after the match to say goodbye to new friends and participate in the closing ceremony of the Seychelles “Peace and Friendship Week”.

“Peter Band” from Kenya
Popular Peace Boat regulars ”Peter Band” joined the 51st voyage from Singapore to Mombasa to share their rich Kenyan culture with participants bound for Kenya.

Band members Peter Orwa Awou, Eric Mwangi Wakanyi, George Owuor Nina and Gordon Ochieng Abich injected a fresh vibe to the boat with a powerful drum performance.

The lively beats of Peter Band`s Djembe drums
As well as performing a number of live shows, the energetic foursome presented workshops in Swahili language and drumming, as well as delivering lectures about Africa’s wildlife, focusing on the ongoing battle to eradicate Africa from ivory poachers.
