Dancing under the stars
Due to the fury of Typhoon Nabi, the first few days onboard Peace Boat resulted in a dose of seasickness for many onboard. When the waves died down a belated welcome party on the deck was held. |

September 11 reflection
September 11, 2005 marked four years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon near Washington. Peace Boat commemorated the anniversary by showing special guest John Junkerman’s documentary, Chomsky 9-11. Made in 2003, it mixes a selection of speeches given by linguist, philosopher, and political activist Noam Chomsky. In the film, Chomsky discusses his opinion of the United State’s role as the most powerful nation, before and after the September 11 attacks.
Peace Boat also facilitated a panel discussion between documentary-maker John Junkerman, Korean journalist Jung Inhwan and US citizen Kumar Lewis (pictured). Each shared their personal thoughts on the attacks, which led an interesting discussion among speakers and participants. |

Pool opening
Peace Boat’s swimming pool was officially opened once the stormy weather improved. Many participants took time from attending lectures and workshops to relax in the outdoor pool. |

Spreading peace through Global Education
Global educator Kip Cates was onboard Peace Board to share his views regarding what it means to be a global citizen. He held a series of talks with participants about how to increase awareness of global issues through the teaching of foreign languages. He also shared his ideas with teachers of Peace Boat’s Global English/Espanol Training (GET) programme. Pictured with two GET teachers, Kip discusses tools for teaching students about the would around us. |

Singing competition
The West took on the East in the voyage’s inaugural singing contest. Eight contestants from each side performed, from traditional Japanese songs to pop music. Japan West narrowly took the trophy. |

Peace Boat’s Language Programme
Peace Boat runs an intensive language course called Global English/Espanol Training (GET) Programme. Sixteen teachers from eight countries are teaching intensive Spanish and English study programmes to close to 200 participants onboard. Open classes are also available daily for anyone to attend. GET teachers perform a welcome ceremony for their new students. |
