To further promote communication through language exchange, four GET (Global English / Espanol Training) Projects were introduced as a way for onboard participants and GET teachers to work together. Participants choose from one of four interactive and creativity-based projects: journal team, performance team, media/video team and Spanish team, to be presented towards the end of the voyage. In order to ease participants’ fears about using English, GET teachers performed a memorable rendition of “Cinderella” in Japanese (which is not their native language)—actually a mix of standard Japanese with archaic classical Japanese and different dialects—to inspire and motivate participants to use as much English as possible during the GET Projects.

Traveling on a budget proved to be a popular topic as many participants attended a workshop presented by GET teacher Pat Lilja about WWOOF-ing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). For a small fee, WWOOF will provide a list of organic farmers in the country of your choice. Choices range anywhere from Australia to Ghana to Nepal. The host can be contacted to see if help is needed, and if so, in exchange for 4-6 hours of work you can get free room and meals. The length of time you wish to stay depends on your needs as well as the farm’s needs. Some WWOOFers stay for a few weeks, others stay for months. WWOOF aims to bring awareness about organic farming (without using artificial chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides) as well as provide cultural exchange. Pat’s WWOOF-ing experience brought him to the Yoshida Farm in Kyushu, where he not only tended to the crops and cared for the farm animals but most importantly he improved his Japanese language skills.

With a blink of an eye, trump cards appeared and disappeared between the fingers of magician Taiga “Tiger” Endo, who received a round of applause for his agility and swiftness. Peace Boat participants were treated to a magic show where Tiger performed an array of magic “techniques” (as opposed to “tricks”) to dazzle the crowd, including his Guinness Book of World Record-breaking coin rolling technique in which he rolled a coin 54 times between all his fingers in one minute (this record has since been broken by a magician who rolled 62 time this year). Trained in Los Angeles, Tiger was an apprentice to magicians before performing on his own in Japan. This is his first appearance aboard Peace Boat. From Catania to Le Havre, Tiger will conduct workshops where he will demonstrate magic techniques using trump cards, silver rings, scarves and rope. Using rope as a device, Tiger performed magic with Ms. Kobayashi who volunteered to assist him (in photo). For his final performance, Tiger’s students will also perform magic they have learned during the workshops.

Kick off! The 49th voyage’s first soccer tournament was inaugurated on June 20th, complete with opening ceremony, half time show and closing ceremony. Teams were divided into four leagues with the final two competing in the final match. Since all participants were welcome to join, each team had a mixture of male and female players of all ages and levels. With much enthusiasm, a large audience came to cheer on the teams making for a lively atmosphere around the sports deck venue. After defeating nine teams, it was team “Oolong Tea” who was awarded the trophy. Kyoko Watarai, a member of team “Oolang Tea” said “There was great team spirit in all the teams which really enhanced the game. I really enjoyed myself and hope we can do it again.”
