February 2, 2005 Ittekimasu! Peace Boat begins its 48th Global Peace Voyage
Friends and family members enjoyed fine weather for the departure ceremony at Yokohama.
Peace Boat departed from Yokohama Port and briefly stopping in Kobe, Peace Boat began its 48th voyage on Wednesday, February 2nd. Involving more than 900 participants, ranging in age from 10 months to 91 years, this 105-day adventure will visit 21 ports in 17 countries. Hundreds of family and friends of those onboard attended the departure ceremonies in Yokohama and Kobe, all wishing voyage participants an exciting and fruitful voyage.
The Peruvian and Eritrean ambassadors to Japan.
Serving as special guest speakers at the Yokohama departure ceremony were the Eritrean Ambassador and representative from the Peruvian Embassy to Japan. Ambassador H.E. Estifanos Afeworki from Eritrea shared with attendees his appreciation for Peace Boat's contribution to facilitating bilateral communication between the people of Japan and Eritrea. He hopes that Japanese participants will be able to share their experiences of living in a country that has enjoyed fifty years of peace with the citizens of his country, which has experienced more than fifty years of war. Mr. Ryutaro Honda, a 91 year old World War II veteran and one of Peace Boat's most popular guests, provided an address to attendees at the Kobe departure ceremony expressing his best wishes for a successful voyage.
Communication Coordinators, or volunteer interpreters, join the voyage to help facilitate communication between speakers of Japanese and other languages.
Under the theme of "Sixty Years after World War II - How to Create Peace," participants in the voyage will learn about a wide variety of global issues such as peace, human rights and the environment, while experiencing the countries involved first-hand. A vital part of Peace Boat's mission is peace education, which takes many forms both on board and in port. We are fortunate to have more than 30 guest educators who will be presenting onboard lectures and workshops on topics ranging from environmental issues, the reality of migrant workers and photography among others.
Participants wave goodbye to loved ones at Kobe Port.
Participants with a desire for more intensive educational experiences have the opportunity to participate in Peace Boat's Global University program, or language training in the Global English/Espanol Training (GET) programme's intensive English and Spanish courses. In port, special exchange, home stay, exposure, and tour programmes will provide participants with hands-on experiences available nowhere else.
