On March 27th, a group of Peace Boat participants and staff celebrated Easter in a self-organized event. As this is a memorable holiday for many in English and Spanish-speaking countries, Global English/Espanol Training (GET) Programme teachers from the United States and England took the opportunity to share this important part of their culture. The Easter event included a discussion on the religious and secular aspects of the holiday and an Easter egg hunt. |

Here, participants take part in the first of several thangka workshops. Thangka, Tibetan religious paintings, are incredibly detailed and make use of traditional symbols and colors to relay meaning and invoke meditation. These workshops are led by guest educator Don Van Amerongen, an American artist specializing in Tibetan art. |

Peace Boat’s 48th voyage includes a nine-day crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Even with such a long period of time between ports, participants were too busy to feel restless; several major events were held during this time. One of the most exciting was the Dance Festival, an event in which nineteen teams competed for the honor of being named number one. Here, members of one team perform a spoof of Nanchu Soran, a traditional dance that has recently been revived and modernized. |

Although the Atlantic ocean was often rough, one popular pastime was spending time on deck, enjoying the sea air and watching for signs of marine life. Dolphins and flying fish are a relatively common sight, and a lucky few have caught a glimpse of humpback whales! |

Another major event held during the Atlantic crossing was the Topaz Collection, a fashion show featuring almost 100 participants, staff, and guest educators as models. Participants crowded into Peace Boat’s largest venue to see their friends model garments from Japan, China, Viet Nam, India, and Africa. Additionally, one group of young designers designed and produced their own line, “Earth”, especially for the show. Here, Nagasawa Yoshifumi (20) poses backstage in a traditional Japanese kimono. |
