Karaoke is naturally a popular pastime in the evenings onboard Peace Boat. The night after leaving Marseilles, the 48th voyage held a karaoke contest in which participants performed in front of a full house. Here, Kai Shoko performs “Nada soso”, a popular Okinawan song.

Soccer exchange programs are one of the many ways in which participants are able to make personal connections with people in each of the ports Peace Boat visits. Before arriving in Tripoli, the Peace Ball Cup, Peace Boat’s onboard soccer tournament, was held.

The Basketball Festival was another very popular sports event, with more than 130 participants competing in games of three-on-three. Here, one team makes a basket in the final seconds of their game.

Basketball Festival attendees were treated to a special “half-time” performance featuring dance and cultural performances. Members of the hip-hop dance team entertained audience members with this routine.

This unusual form of dance is called Nanking Tamasudare. In this act, women manipulate sticks tied together with rope into various shapes. While it may seem relatively simple, Nanking Tamasudare is extremely difficult and the performers spent long hours in rehearsal for their performance.
