Peace Boat’s 48th voyage held its Sports Festival on February 23, 2005 while en route to Mombasa, Kenya. Sports Festivals (“undokai” in Japanese) are an important part of school life in Japan and help bring students together in the spirit of competition outside of the classroom. While many Peace Boat participants may no longer be students, the onboard Sports Festival brought them together in much the same way. This photo shows the Suzaku (Red Bird) Team during a break in the action. |

A Byakko (White Tiger) Team member cheers on his team. All participants, staff, and guests were divided into teams based on the month in which they were born, and people of all ages and states of physical fitness were encouraged to participate. “As we get older, we really don’t have a chance to participate in Sports Festivals,” one retired participant commented. “I was really glad to be able to do so here, and got to meet a lot of great people.” |
