Between Valparaiso and Tahiti, guitarist and singer song writer Shinya Sesoko, known as Shy-san, from Okinawa, came on board to not only give some amazing live performances but also to create music though workshops with the Peace Boat participants. Their song ‘Arrigato, Sayonara’ was a big success on the ship, which could be heard around the port of Tahiti as we sailed away and bid him goodbye.

Carolina Reusch boarded Peace Boat in Valparaiso, Chile to introduce ancient Rapa Nui culture and dance and contemporary issues to participants before arriving on this mysterious island in the middle of the Pacific. Through workshops and story telling her insight was an invaluable contribution and preparation for a two-day stop on Rapa Nui. Carolina, performing a traditional dance to the music of Shy-san.

Between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso a group of over 100 Peace Boat participants went on a ten-day excursion to the Antarctic. They travelled onboard the ‘Akademik Sergey Voyager’ and sailed through some of the world’s most unique, untouched landscapes. They came back with stories of penguins, whales, sealions, dolphins and birds of prey with outstanding photos to prove it.

Christmas festivities were celebrated with performances, peace messages, photo slide shows and songs, however with the jolting reality of the Tsunami in South East Asia, the outdoor New Year event took a slightly more serious note. A minute of silence was held in respect for the victims of this tragedy and fundraising began at the start 2005 to contribute towards the Peace Boat water filter campaign.

Brady Stracham is an onboard GET teacher who was inspired by his visit to Kenya on the 45th voyage and decided to set up links between an orphanage in Japan and the WEMA center in Mombassa. He not only brought over 150 books to the center but he also managed to raise 1500 US dollars and deliver letters from orphans in Japan to orphans in Africa and now plans to take their reciprocal cards back to Japan.

Everyday the beating of traditional Japanese Taiko drums can be heard out on deck. Peace Boat staff member and long-time Taiko player Jin Ueda, has dedicated his time and know-how to train others to do the same on the 47th voyage. They have performed in several ports of call and their performances just get better and better.

“Nishi” specializes in traditional Japanese calligraphy and having brought over 1000 pieces of special calligraphy paper on board, he has succeeded in spreading his personalized poetry and insightful messages to many of the Peace Boat participants over the duration of the whole voyage.
