Raku-go is a traditional Japanese solo performance art, a little like a combination of stand-up comedy and spoken word performance in traditional Japanese style. From a profession in which over 99% of the top-level performers are men, Peace Boat welcomed Kokontei Kikuchiyo (center), one of the few female performers at the highest level of Raku-go. Joining Peace Boat for the 12th time, Kikuchiyo-san organized workshops and talked about her rise to the top of a male dominated institution as well as holding two performances. |

Takahashi Shigehito (right) is a student of post-war aid relief at the Japan-based “Pacific Asia Resource Center” (PARC). As a former volunteer at Amnesty International and having spent seven years in East Timor, supporting the local NGO movement, he came onboard to give workshops on peace building and conflict resolution as a guest educator for the onboard Global University program. |

Erik Liongoren is a professional photographer from the Philippines who joined Peace Boat from Subic Bay to Cape Town. While constantly recording breath-taking images onboard and in port, Erik also demonstrated, through his naturally outgoing and friendly demeanour, the importance of developing a personal relationship first and recording images second. |

Emilie Mcglone, a Spanish language teacher with the onboard GET program from the US, is the founding member of a two-year-old NGO, MUJERES. She gave a lecture, outlining the principles and history behind the organization, whose mission is to raise awareness on health and environmental issues for women and children around the world. One of MUJERES main projects is to promote AIDS education in West Africa. |

As part of the onboard events on December 1st, international AIDS days, a charity auction was organized, to raise money for the NGO, MUJERES. Thai massage, a night in the ship’s deluxe suite, guitar lessons and a collection of onboard photos were just some of the items to be auctioned off. USD $3,000 was raised in the auction and a further USD $2,000 to witness 12 of the GET language teachers and onboard interpreters shave their heads for the cause. |

One day before the ship’s arrival in Rio de Janeiro, in the mood for some Samba and Salsa, Peace Boat hosted an outdoor carnival, under the direction of onboard guest musician Francis Silva, with a splendid array of costumes, dance and music. |
