Twice world entertainer of the year, taking the title at age 14 and again at 18, Mr. Maschu has an array of amazing talents that dazzled Peace Boat participants at his onboard shows between Mombasa and Rio de Janeiro. Juggling, break dancing, magic skills and mime are just some of the mind blowing skills that encouraged participants to learn and perform themselves.

The infectious laughter and jokes of Katsushige Fukushima enhanced the onboard atmosphere between Mombasa and Cape Town. As an integral member of the AAA (Act Against AIDS) charity campaign in Japan, this comedian and mime artist uses comedy to address various social issues, using his talents to make the issues more accessible and raise awareness among the public.

Shemaiah Nekwa joined Peace Boat from Mombasa to Cape Town as a guest English teacher in the onboard GET programme. As a Kenyan national, he spoke about English from a non-native speaker’s perspective and gave guest lectures and seminars on the global role of English today and the AIDS crisis on the African continent.

The Indian Festival of Light, otherwise known as Diwali, was celebrated onboard between Singapore and the Seychelles. Poetry, music, stories, a slide show, traditional Indian dance, a fashion show and a short movie made up this Indian cultural bonanza. GET teacher Sonia Narang and web page reporter Kerys Williams show Indian dress and introduce the country and people.

Following the tragic earthquake in Niigata, Peace Boat participants rallied around and collected 3000 US dollars in donations to be sent to help give support to those affected in Japan, providing them with food and blankets.

“Global Day” celebrated the international flavour and diversity onboard Peace Boat, with different booths explaining the cultures and traditions of ten countries: India, Canada, Kenya, the UK, the US, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Japan. Here, in shorts and sandals on the sun deck, Brady from Canada demonstrates the cold weather game of hockey.

In recognition and celebration of traditional Japanese art and culture, Peace Boat held an outdoor Summer Festival in which participants put on traditional Japanese summer dress, listened to taiko drumming and watched traditional theatre performances. Everyone was excited to see an American female and an Australian male win the Japanese fashion contest. Voyage Director Inoue Nao and P.A. system coordinator Ueda Jin perform taiko drumming.
