Peace Boat's language training programme is now accepting applications for English and Spanish language teachers for the following voyages:

104th Global Voyage – Departs Yokohama on April 9,* 2020, returns July 23, 2020. See the full voyage itinerary here.

PB2: 1st Global Voyage – Departs Yokohama April 8,* 2020 and returns July 18, 2020. See the full voyage itinerary here.

*All successful applicants must be able to attend the pre-voyage orientation to be held in Tokyo roughly one week before the official departure date.

International interviews will be held via Skype between December 17 – 20, and national interviews will be held at our offices in Tokyo on December 21 - 22. National applicants living in Japan but unable to travel to Tokyo at that time may request an online interview, but must then follow international applicant procedures. All applicants will be considered for both voyages. While applicants may state a preference for one voyage over the other in their cover letters, final voyage assignments are at the discretion of programme coordinators.

What's Involved?

Peace Boat's onboard language programme, GET (Global English/Español Training), is a communication-based programme that aims to improve students' confidence and communicative ability in English and/or Spanish through a dynamic combination of onboard classwork, language-based events and activities, and exchange programmes in ports of call. Through GET, Peace Boat participants can acquire the necessary language skills to make their voyage as memorable and meaningful as possible. For teachers, the programme offers the opportunity to work with a great deal of autonomy, using their creativity both in and out of the classroom while enjoying the unique experience that is Peace Boat.

Eligibility

Basic requirements:

  • Have at least 18 months of relevant full-time experience teaching English and/or Spanish as a second language
  • Be highly advanced speakers of English (for those applying to teach English) or both English and Spanish (for those applying to teach Spanish). Note: it is not necessary to be a 'native' or 'first-language' speaker.
  • Be available for the duration of the voyage for which they are applying (including online training and pre-voyage orientation periods)
  • Be able to obtain all relevant visas required to participate in the voyage for which they are applying

Application Process

Please be advised that the application deadline for each voyage is approximately four months prior to its departure and eight months prior to its completion.

A selection of applicants will be invited to attend either full-day information and interview session at GET’s office in Takadanobaba or invited for a Skype interview, depending on their location and availability. These appointments are typically held two or three weeks after the Volunteer Teacher application deadline for each voyage. Please note that all travel and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.
